2-REG Statement on the 2-RORO Accident

The Guernsey Director of Civil Aviation (DCA) and SGI Guernsey Ltd. (2-REG) confirm that an accident involving a Cirrus SR22T aircraft, registration 2-RORO, occurred on May 12, 2019 between Raglan and Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, Wales, United Kingdom. The accident aircraft had been registered in Guernsey since August 1, 2018. The three occupants of the aircraft were reportedly taken to hospital with minor injuries. No further casualties have been reported.

As per ICAO procedure (Annex 13), it is the state of occurrence that is responsible for initiating and conducting an aircraft accident investigation. The state of occurrence (in this case the UK) will invite the state of registry (in this case Guernsey) to participate in such an investigation as required.

The DCA has an agreement in place with the UK AAIB (Air Accidents Investigation Branch) for the latter to assist, on behalf of the DCA, in the investigation. Under that agreement, the UK AAIB will represent Guernsey where appropriate.

The accident falls under the United Kingdom’s jurisdiction, who have now instructed the UK AAIB to initiate and lead the investigation.  The DCA and SGI Guernsey (2-REG) are collecting data and maintaining contact with the UK AAIB as information becomes available.  The investigation by the UK AAIB remains ongoing, as we continue to work towards a full understanding of all aspects of this accident.

2-REG Aircraft Registry Reaches 500 Aircraft

Latest Addition of a Boeing 737-800 Marks the Registry’s Key Milestone

La Villiaze, Guernsey – May 7, 2019 – The States of Guernsey Aircraft Registry (“2-REG”) has registered its 500th aircraft, reaching a key milestone in its rapid growth since the registry’s formation in December 2013.

“Exceeding the 500 aircraft mark is clearly a great achievement for 2-REG,” said 2-REG Director Paolo Lironi. “A broad section of the aviation community has already got to experience the benefits and professionalism of 2-REG, which today provides a world-class commercial approach with 24/7 service, and much-needed availability and flexibility, delivering clear value to a global and diverse base of customers.”

2-REG is an ICAO registry that is well recognized around the world for accommodating all aircraft categories, including commercial aircraft, business jets, helicopters, and general aviation. In 2015, 2-REG began to issue Aircraft Operating Certificates (“AOCs”), of which six have been issued thus far.

2-REG has built its reputation by being extremely responsive and customer-focused, offering its worldwide coverage coupled with competitive fees, making it the most successful registry within the aircraft leasing sector.

Lironi concluded that “the 2-REG team would like to thank all our registered customers, and in particular, our initial customers, who first believed in 2-REG and understood its real value for their businesses.”

This milestone is only the beginning of a 30-year long journey. 2-REG plans to further increase its visibility by exhibiting at EBACE on May 21-23, 2019 in Geneva (www.ebace.aero/2019), and is a proud sponsor of the 47th Guernsey Air Rally on June 7-9, 2019 (www.guernseyaeroclub.com/air-rally).

Avoiding airspace infringement

Current Situation: Risks and Consequences

Airspace in Europe is often very complex and avoiding airspace infringements is not always easy for even the most experienced of pilots. So careful planning is required to avoid airspace infringements. Unauthorised entry into controlled airspace increases the risk of an airprox or mid-air collision with other aircraft operating under air traffic control. Navigational errors are a major cause of airspace infringements, so care should always be taken to ensure that good navigational techniques are used at all times.

The number of airspace infringements has increased significantly over recent years and it is important that we all work to reverse this trend.

This page suggests useful tips that will help to reduce the risk of airspace infringement and mid-air collision.

What can you do?

Before the Flight: Preparation is Key!

  • Prepare and accurately plan your intended and alternate routes in advance!
  • Airspace in the vicinity of airports may be complex with high traffic volumes, which increases the risk of mid-air collisions.
  • Use approved, modern technologies that can support your flight planning, but keep practicing your basic pilot, navigation and dead reckoning skills.
  • Gather all the necessary flight information such as NOTAMs, weather information, special zones activation, airport charts, airspace structure, etc. – even for local flights.
  • Save the ATC and FIS frequencies you will need during your flight!

During Flight:  Situation Awareness and Communication is Crucial!

  • Know where you are at all times: approved navigation technologies and frequent radio communication significantly increase situational awareness when you’re in the air!
  • Stay in contact with the Flight Information Service (FIS) / Air Traffic Control (ATC) or actively monitor the corresponding frequency.
  • Stay visible: keep your transponder switched on to your assigned squawk (or the default 7000 code).
  • The flight plan is your guide: follow your plan but be ready to adjust or change it in case of exceptional or unforeseen circumstances.
  • If you know you have infringed controlled airspace, keep your transponder activated and contact FIS/ATC to inform them and request assistance. Never hesitate to communicate!

Use your navigational aids wisely in support of your situational awareness. Always ensure continued safe navigation is possible in case of failure of your electronic device by having an adequate back-up alternative ready for use. In case of using VFR charts as your (only) back-up, keep your basic pilot, navigation and dead reckoning skills current.

After the Flight: Lessons Learned

  • Replay, review and debrief your flight.
  • Share your experience with others and report any incident.

Last but not least, we encourage you to share this page to help others in the aviation community.
